Dear Mr President Sir,
Subject : Urgent Need for Immediate Intervention to Prevent Potential National Unrest
Sir, I hope this letter finds you in good health and unwavering determination to lead our beloved nation through these trying times.
Sir, I write to you not as usual but with a deep sense of urgency, compelled by the unfolding events in Kenya and the strikingly similar conditions we currently face in Nigeria.
Recent developments in Kenya, where widespread protests have erupted due to severe economic hardships, serve as a stark warning of what may likely transpire within our borders in the coming days or weeks as the economic distress experienced by our citizens has reached a peak and critical point and the patience of the masses is rapidly waning. Obviously, the pervasive sense of frustration and despair, driven by escalating costs of living, high unemployment rates, insecurity, incessant kidnappings and banditry activities and a lack of basic amenities are palpable and have rendered the socio-economic environment extremely volatile.
Your Excellency, the gravity of the situation cannot be overstated and the potential for widespread civil unrest looms large as the consequences of such upheaval would be overwhelmingly devastating for our nation. The destruction of infrastructure, loss of lives and the disruption of economic activities would set Nigeria back by years, if not decades, undermining the progress we have strived to achieve.
Sir, I must also point out that your intelligent gathering team, if operating with the requisite vigilance, should have already alerted you to the imminent danger posed by the current economic situation. Therefore, it is utmostly imperative that pragmatic and multifaceted solutions are implemented with immediate alacrity.
However, here are some immediate measures that could be pivotal in stabilizing the situation:
1. Mandate Consumer Protection Agencies: Empower the consumer protection agency in each state to enforce price reductions on staple foodstuffs across the federation. This should be an immediate directive, with clear instructions to prioritize affordability for the masses.
2. Presidential Task Force on Food Distribution: Establish a task force directly under the presidency to supervise the immediate sale and distribution of foodstuffs to the populace. This task force should ensure transparency, efficiency, and fairness in its operations.
3. Economic Relief Programs: Implement targeted economic relief initiatives to alleviate the financial burden on the most vulnerable segments of our society. Subsidies for essential goods, financial assistance programs, and job creation schemes can provide immediate respite.
4. Dialogue and Engagement: Foster an environment of open dialogue with civil society groups, labor unions, and community leaders. Their insights and cooperation are crucial in understanding and addressing the concerns of the populace effectively.
5. Transparency and Accountability: Ensure transparency in government spending and accountability in the execution of economic policies. The public's trust can be rebuilt by demonstrating a commitment to ethical governance and the judicious use of national resources.
6. Long-term Economic Reforms: Initiate and fast-track long-term economic reforms aimed at diversifying the economy, enhancing agricultural productivity, and promoting industrialization. Sustainable economic growth can only be achieved through a resilient and diversified economic base.
7. Strengthening Social Safety Nets: Expand and strengthen social safety net programs to provide a buffer for the most vulnerable populations during these economic hardships.
8. Healthcare and Education Support: Increase funding and support for healthcare and education sectors to ensure that the basic needs of the populace are met, thereby reducing the pressure on struggling families.
9. Public Communication Strategy: Develop a robust communication strategy to regularly inform the public about the steps being taken by the government to address the economic crisis. Transparency and frequent updates will help manage public expectations and reduce anxiety.
10. Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanisms: Establish strong monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to track the implementation and impact of these measures, ensuring that they achieve the desired outcomes and can be adjusted as necessary.
Your Excellency Sir, you are an action-oriented President who means well for Nigeria and I pray that your tenure will not be marred by ugly developments, in Jesus' name.
Mr. President, it must be noted that the masses currently are hungry and massively angry with this administration and you must therefore use all resources at your disposal to ameliorate their suffering now.
Additionally, I urge you to open all major borders like Idiroko and Seme with immediacy as despite the official closure, government officials are still aiding nefarious activities at these borders on a daily basis, unless we choose to ignore it. Acting decisively on this matter will not only enhance trade but also reduce the exploitation of our borders for unlawful activities.
Sir, am constrained to write again as a bonafide member of the APC party who is deeply concerned that your administration must not fail in any dimensionality as undoubtedly you are a man with a large heart and a clear commitment to the welfare of Nigerians with the conspicuously inclined profound initiative of Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration.
Intrinsically, is crucial to acknowledge that any attempt by workers to embark on a strike again at this juncture will likely be uncontrollable as the masses and youths already on edge could hijack such movements as witnessed in Kenya, exacerbating the situation and making governance impossible and this you must curtail possibly now to potentially avert the looming disaster.
Your Excellency, the time to act is now as the cost of inaction is far too great and the window to prevent nationwide unrest is rapidly closing. I hereby urge you sir to marshal all resources at your disposal and to leverage your esteemed leadership to guide our nation through this perilous juncture.
Sir, history will judge us by our response to this critical moment, hence the need to demonstrate unwavering resolve and compassionate leadership, ensuring that our beloved Nigeria emerges stronger and more unified from these challenging times.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Oluyemisi Ayinde
